Transportation Technician I

Job Summary:
Position requires a variety of duties to maintain, improve and extend road life, including surface, substrata, drainage and right-of –way.

Duties Performed:
Hauling aggregates, fixed loads, liquids and heavy equipment. Construction and repairs of drainage systems such as culverts, bridges, bar-pits and other waterways; Equipment operation as needed, snow removal, flagging, basic maintenance of vehicles, light and heavy duty equipment; regulatory sign maintenance and installation. Performs other related job duties as required.

Machines, tools and equipment used:
Operates equipment as required; Trucks with trailers, Front end loader, Forklift, Compactor, Rollers, Pug-mill, Oil distributor, Water truck, Crack-sealer, Backhoe, Snow Plows, Graders, Sanders, Chip spreader, and Dozers. Uses various hand and power tools to repair and maintain the equipment being operated.

Working Conditions:
Generally extreme dust, cold, heat, wet, wind, noise and hazardous driving conditions due to ice and poor visibility; Stress level may rise, as environmental conditions change to extremes; Position may be requested to work Holidays, weekends, or before and after normal working hours. This may affect, sleep patterns; even sleep depravation. May work at heights, steep angles on foot or while operating machinery. Will work around buried and overhead utilities and electrical hazards.

Job Specifications:

Physical requirements:
Must have the ability to complete a full work shift of physical labor, with lifting extremes present.

Educational requirements:
High school diploma or equal

Special skills:
Must have a valid, current Class “A” Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with an air brake endorsement. CDL, license requirements, requires Drug and Alcohol testing.

Experience required:
Must have the ability to apply mathematics to calculations used in determining materials used, construction experience dealing with road construction, maintenance and concrete work is desired. Must be able to read and understand blueprints and incorporate and implement the necessary procedures to complete the tasks assigned.

Training required after hiring:
When offered, any equipment operational training schools or workshops, which are available, and fall within the budgetary restraints of the existing budget: Safety training as required.
