Detention Officer/ Sheriff’s Office

Job Summary:
Maintaining the overall security of the Washington County Jail.

Duties Performed:
Booking/receiving inmates, using the law enforcement computer program; Supervision of inmates and inmate workers; Transporting inmates to and from court appearances, other facilities and medical appointments; Dispensing of prescription and non-prescription medications; Court security; Monitoring inmate visitation; Taking cash and security bonds after hours and weekends for the District Court. Perform other related duties as required.

Computer, duty weapon, communication devices, Intoxilyzer 5000 (breath analysis instrument), fax machine, handcuffs

Working Conditions:
Primary duties are performed in a controlled environment, a lockup detention facility. Many functions of employment pose a high degree of hazard; uncertainty in working with inmates, such as, inmates arrested that under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. .

Job Specifications: Physical requirements:
Must pass the Police Officers Standards and Training physical fitness test           

Educational requirements:            
High school diploma or equal

Special skills:
Ability to deal with diverse and sometimes hostile situations

Experience required:
None.            

Training required after hiring:
Police Officers Standards and Training Academy for Detention Officers within one year of hire (5 week academy); Employee, must qualify with duty weapon every 6 months

Additional Comments:
All applicants undergo a fingerprint clearance by the Idaho Dept. of Law Enforcement (Bureau of Criminal Identification) and FBI; Applicant, must be free of any felony or misdemeanor convictions and not have driver's license suspensions from the previous five years.
