Bridge Technician
Job Summary:
Position requirements the same as Transportation Technician II, plus the proficient use of assembly skills related to sectional and multi-plates bridges, layout of structures associated with bridge construction and repair using the ability to read blueprints, elevation and grade stakes. Inspects bridges under twenty feet and follow up inspections on bridges over twenty feet per engineer’s requirements.
Duties Performed:
Performs all duties of the Transportation Technician I and II, plus fabrication of metal, cement and wood structures for support of traffic loads. Establishes drainage systems, such as, installation of steel culverts, etc.; follows engineering specifications in the lay out of new construction on bridges, cement work forming, grade and elevations. Uses engineering instruments with proficiency such as the operation of transits and lazier equipment, prior to, and during construction to ensure proper grades and elevations used meet the engineering specifications. Does, follow-up inspections on bridges.

Machines, tools and equipment used:
Operates equipment as required; Trucks with trailers, Front end loader, Forklift, Compactor, Rollers, Pug-mill, Oil distributor, Water truck, Crack-sealer, Backhoe, Snow Plows, Graders, Sanders, Chip spreader, Asphalt wheel cutter, jackhammer chains, tongs, and Dozers. Uses transits, lazier equipment, hot saws, chain saws and various hand and power tools to repair and maintain the equipment being operated, or construction being accomplished.
Working Conditions:
Generally extreme dust, cold, heat, wet, wind, noise and hazardous driving conditions due to ice and poor visibility; Stress level may rise, as environmental conditions change to extremes; Position may be requested to work Holidays, weekends, or before and after normal working hours. This may affect, sleep patterns; even sleep depravation. May work at heights, steep angles on foot or while operating machinery. Will work around buried and overhead utilities and electrical hazards. In addition, employee may work over at heights over swift running water, confined spaces, on ice covered work surfaces, many times on narrow ledges.
Job Specifications:
Physical requirements:
Extended periods of time spent pushing, lifting moving, assembling building materials, at times, which can be at extremes. This position requires flexibility and good eye hand coordination, along with other physical agilities generally required in the construction field.
Educational requirements:
High school diploma or equal; any related courses to Engineering Technician training (desired).
Special skills:
Proficient use of engineering equipment such as but not limited to, transits and lazier equipment, and their applications. Must be able to read blue prints and transpose the related information to the construction application, such as but not limited to reading grade and elevation stakes. Must be a proficient welder, using both electric and gas fed devices. Must have a current valid CDL Class “A” driver’s license, with an air brake endorsement.
Experience required:
Must have experience in construction using skills to demonstrate level of proficiency in such things as, laying grades and elevations, construction of concrete forms using all available types of building materials acceptable in this application. Have the ability to pour and finish concrete, meeting all engineering requirements.
Training required after hiring:
When offered, any equipment operational training schools or workshops, which are available, and fall within the budgetary restraints of the existing budget: Safety training as required.
